Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Majalah Patologi Indonesia (MPI) / The Indonesian Journal of Pathology is a quarterly scientific journal published by the Indonesian Association of Pathologists. MPI utilizes a peer-review system for manuscript selection and is intended to provide a medium for the publication of original articles, case reports, literature reviews, editorials, brief reports, and letters to editors in the field of human pathology. The journal welcomes contributions concerning pathological processes, evaluation of diagnostic methods in pathology, and scientific/technological advances in pathology.

 

Article categories

  1. Original article: Reports data from research. Includes the Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections.
  2. Case report: Reports rare or interesting cases in the field of human pathology. Includes the Introduction, Case Report, and Discussion sections.
  3. Literature review: Reports a comprehensive summary of journal articles or books regarding a certain topic which concerns the latest advances or an interesting phenomenon in pathology.
  4. Editorial: Reports issues/problems of concern in the field of human pathology.
  5. Brief reports: Reports data from preliminary research to stimulate further research in the field. Includes the Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections.
  6. Letter to the editors: Comments on a published article of timely interest and particularly if controversy exists.

 

Cover letter

  • Cover letter should be submitted in Microsoft Word (.DOCX format).
  • Font size 12. 1.5 spacing. Size A4. Margins 2.54 cm/1 inch on all sides. Alignment justified.
  • Use a single tab on the first line of each new paragraph.
  • The cover letter should briefly summarize the important points of the submitted manuscript and confirm that the submitted manuscript is original, approved by all authors, and is currently not being considered for publication in another journal.
  • Any competing interests must be disclosed in the cover letter.
  • The cover letter must be signed by all authors.

 

General instructions for manuscript

  • Manuscript should be submitted in Microsoft Word (.DOCX format).
  • Font size 12. 1.5 spacing. Size A4. Margins 2.54 cm/1 inch on all sides. Alignment justified.
  • Use a single tab on the first line of each new paragraph.
  • Do not use page breaks or multiple returns between sections (one section should directly follow the previous one on the page).
  • Insert page numbers on the bottom right corner of each page continuously from the first page until the last page.
  • Headings should be in bold. Subheadings should be in italics.
  • Authors should use the English language throughout their submission.
  • Measurement should be presented in SI units.
  • Standard abbreviations should be used. Terms must be abbreviated on first use and the abbreviation used for the rest of the manuscript.

 

Title page

All manuscripts must contain a title page that includes the following information:

  • Title: Concise, specific, no more than 20 words, in bold.
  • Full names of all authors.
  • Affiliations of the authors indicated by numbers in superscript.
  • ORCID ID of all authors or at a minimum of the first and corresponding author/s.
  • Full name, postal address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the corresponding author.

 

Abstract and keywords

Original articles, case reports, and literature reviews must include an abstract followed by keywords conforming to the following:

  • Written on a separate page after the title page.
  • One paragraph, not more than 250 words.
  • Structured abstract for original articles including Introduction, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.
  • Terms that appear only once must not be abbreviated. Any term abbreviated in the Abstract must be abbreviated again in the main body of the manuscript.
  • Keywords not more than 10 words.

 

Original article

  • Introduction: Outlines the background, problems, and aim of the study.
  • Methods: Should include sufficient technical information to allow the study to be repeated and the results reproduced by other researchers. The study design, setting, time, and population/samples should be mentioned. Any experiment done should be mentioned along with the method, reagents, or instruments used. Statistical analysis performed should be mentioned including the name of the statistical tests, the name and version of the statistical software, and the p-value threshold.
  • Results: Can be presented in text, tables, or figures. The text should not repeat what is already presented in tables or figures. All tables and figures must be cited in the Results section.
  • Discussion: Clear and concise summary of the study’s findings, its relevancy with previous studies, and its significance in the field of pathology. Only variables included in the study should be discussed. The strengths and limitations of the study should be mentioned.

 

Acknowledgements

Mention any individuals who contributed to the study but do not qualify as an author. State their full name, title, affiliation, and contribution. If there are no individuals to acknowledge, the authors should write “Not applicable”.

 

Funding

Mention all sources of funding. If the sponsor/s has any role in the study, it should also be mentioned. If no funding was received, the authors should write “Not applicable”.

 

Authors’ contributions

Mention the individual contributions of the authors. Refer to each author using their initials. According to the ICMJE guidelines, to qualify as an author, one should have i) substantially contributed to the conception and the design of the study, or in the acquisition, analysis and interpretation of the data; ii) been contributed to manuscript drafting or critical revisions on the intellectual content; iii) approved of the final manuscript version to be published; and iv) agreed to be accountable for all aspects of the work, so that any questions relating to research integrity or scientific accuracy in any part of the study are appropriately investigated and resolved.

 

Ethical approval and informed consent

Research performed on human subjects, materials, or biological data must be in agreement with the Declaration of Helsinki. All manuscripts reporting such research studies must include the name of the ethics committee that approved the study and the reference number in this section of the manuscript. If a study is exempt from requiring ethical approval, this should be mentioned including the name of the ethics committee that can confirm the exemption and the reasons for the exemption. Ethical approval should be submitted in .PDF format.

For all research involving human subjects or tissue, it must be stated in this section of the manuscript that informed consent was obtained from all participants for participation in the study or use of their tissue. If a study is exempt from requiring informed consent, this should be mentioned including the name of the ethics committee that can confirm the exemption. The informed consent waiver should be submitted in .PDF format.

For case reports in which patient information or images are included, patient consent for publication should be obtained. It must be stated in this section of the manuscript that the patient or parent/guardian/next of kin in cases of minor or deceased patients provided written informed consent for the publication of his/her data. The informed consent should be submitted in .PDF format.

 

Conflict of interests

Authors must disclose any conflict of interests. Conflict of interests are at play if the interpretation and presentation of the data, the conclusions or any other information provided by the authors can be influenced (or may be perceived as such) by their personal or financial relationship with other individuals or organizations, such as reimbursement for salaries, equipment or supplies, or a personal belief that may influence their objectivity and affect their interpretation of the data and associated conclusions as a result. Examples include, but are not limited to financial relationships, such as conflicting patents, grants, funding, bursaries and employment history, as well as personal relationships and strong ethical or personal beliefs. If no competing interests exist, the authors should write “The authors declare that they have no conflict of interests.”

 

References

  • The Vancouver style is used to cite references.
  • References should be limited to articles published in the last 10 years.
  • For papers with more than 6 authors, only the first 6 authors should be written followed by “et al.”.
  • In the Reference list, references must be numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear in the text.
  • In the text, references must be cited using numbers in superscript.
  • Journal titles must be abbreviated according to standard abbreviations.
  • Citing abstracts or personal communications should be avoided.

 

Tables

  • Should be limited to 6.
  • Each table should be submitted along with the manuscript after the Reference list.
  • Font size 12. 1.5 spacing.
  • Tables must be labelled using Arabic numerals (Table 1, Table 2, Table 3, etc.) according to the order of mention in the Results section.
  • Include a short title immediately before the table.
  • Any abbreviations or symbols should be defined immediately below the table (in footnotes).

 

Figures

  • Should be limited to 6.
  • Figures should be submitted in .JPEG format.
  • Figure resolution should be at least 300 dpi.
  • Figures must be labelled using Arabic numerals (Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, etc.) according to the order of mention in the Results section.
  • Figure labels (number, alphabet, arrow, circle, etc.) should be used when necessary. Labels should be of the same font (Arial) and size in all figures. Labels must be in contrast with the background and not overlap.
  • Images or parts thereof have not been published elsewhere unless permission has been obtained and provided to us.
  • Images should not contain any patient information that might identify them unless written permission has been obtained and provided to us.
  • Image manipulation in brightness, contrast, or colour balance should apply to the entire image and not only a selected part to manipulate results. If manipulation is done, it should be described in figure legends.

 

Figure legends

  • Each figure legend should be submitted along with the manuscript after the Tables.
  • All figure labels should be addressed in the figure legend.
  • For microscopic images, the original magnification should be stated in the figure legend.

 

Submission

Authors need to register with the journal before submitting their article via the online submission platform. If already registered, authors can simply log in and begin the submission process.
