Abstract

Conventional cervical smear which is widely used, has several weaknesses, and liquid based preparation (LBP) is one of new methods that have been introduced to try to eliminate those weaknesses. The objective of this research is tocompare the results of cytologic diagnosis between Conventional cervical smear and LBP based in early detection cervical lesion. Methods This is an observational explorative study, to compare conventional smears with LBP, using the Bethesda 2001 criteria. This study was done at RK Charitas hospital and dr. Mohammad Hoesin General hospital Palembang from april 1st untill June 30th, 2010. The sample was taken from one hundred married women. Each smears has two preparation, one with conventional cervical smears and the other using LBP There will be 200 samples to stain with Papanicolaou method. Result LBP give more satisfactory criteria for specimen adequacy (p<0,05 and in LBP it is easier to find the epithelial cells than conventional cervical smears There are no differentiation in interpretation between conventional cervical smear and LBP (p>0,02). Conclusion LBP methods are more superior, had several opportunity that can covered the lacking of ASK methods, giving more satisfactory of adequacy and the clarity of the abnormal cells. Key words : conventional cervical smear, Liquid Based Preparation, Bethesda 2001.
