Author Guidelines

Majalah Patologi Indonesia (MPI) / The Indonesian Journal of Pathology (IJP) is a quarterly, peer-reviewed scientific journal officially published by the Indonesian Association of Pathologists. IJP utilizes a rigorous double-blind peer-review system for manuscript selection and provides a medium for publishing high-quality contributions across the spectrum of human pathology. The journal welcomes contributions concerning pathological processes, evaluation of diagnostic methods in pathology, and scientific/technological advances in pathology.


I. Manuscript Categories

  1. Original Article: Reports data from original research. Includes the Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections.
  2. Case Report: Reports rare or interesting cases in the field of human pathology. Includes the Introduction, Case Report, and Discussion sections.
  3. Literature Review: Reports a comprehensive summary of journal articles or books regarding a certain topic, concerning the latest advances or an interesting phenomenon in pathology.
  4. Editorial: Reports issues/problems of current concern in the field of human pathology.
  5. Brief Reports: Reports data from preliminary research to stimulate further research in the field. Includes the Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections.
  6. Letter to the Editors: Provides comments on a published article of timely interest, particularly if controversy exists.

II. Submission Preparation and Format

A. Cover Letter Requirements

  • The Cover Letter must be submitted in **Microsoft Word (.DOCX format)**.
  • The Cover Letter should briefly summarize the important points of the submitted manuscript and **confirm that the submitted manuscript is original, approved by all authors, and is currently not being considered for publication in another journal**.
  • Any competing interests must be **disclosed** in the cover letter.
  • The cover letter must be **signed by all authors**.

B. General Manuscript Formatting

  • Manuscript should be submitted in **Microsoft Word (.DOCX format)**.
  • Typography: Font size 12, 1.5 spacing, Size A4.
  • Layout: Margins 2.54 cm/1 inch on all sides, justified alignment.
  • Use a single tab on the first line of each new paragraph.
  • Do not use page breaks or multiple returns between sections.
  • Insert continuous **page numbers** on the bottom right corner of each page.
  • Headings should be in **bold**. Subheadings should be in italics.
  • Language: Authors must use the **English language** throughout their submission.
  • Units: Measurement should be presented in **SI units**.
  • Abbreviations: Standard abbreviations should be used. Terms must be abbreviated on first use and the abbreviation used for the rest of the manuscript.

C. Title Page

All manuscripts must contain a title page that includes the following information:

  • Title: Concise, specific, no more than 20 words, in **bold**.
  • Full names of all authors.
  • Affiliations of the authors indicated by numbers in superscript.
  • **ORCID ID** of all authors or at a minimum of the first and corresponding author/s.
  • Full name, postal address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the **corresponding author**.

D. Abstract and Keywords

Original articles, case reports, and literature reviews must include an abstract followed by keywords conforming to the following:

  • Written on a separate page after the title page.
  • One paragraph, **not more than 250 words**.
  • Structured abstract for original articles including Introduction, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.
  • Terms that appear only once must not be abbreviated. Any term abbreviated in the Abstract must be abbreviated again in the main body of the manuscript.
  • Keywords **not more than 10 words**.

III. Main Manuscript Structure (Original Article)

Original Articles must be organized as follows:

  • Introduction: Outlines the background, problems, and aim of the study.
  • Methods: Must include sufficient technical information to allow the study to be repeated and the results reproduced by other researchers. The study design, setting, time, and population/samples should be mentioned. Detail any experiment done, including the method, reagents, or instruments used. Statistical analysis performed should be mentioned, including the name of the statistical tests, the name and version of the statistical software, and the p-value threshold.
  • Results: Can be presented in text, tables, or figures. The text should not repeat data already presented in tables or figures. All tables and figures must be cited in the Results section.
  • Discussion: A clear and concise summary of the study’s findings, its relevancy with previous studies, and its significance in the field of pathology. Only variables included in the study should be discussed. The strengths and limitations of the study should be mentioned.

IV. Ethical Declarations and Disclosure

A. Authors’ Contributions (ICMJE Guidelines)

Mention the individual contributions of the authors, referring to each author using their initials. According to the **ICMJE guidelines**, an author must meet all four criteria:

  1. Substantially contributed to the conception and the design of the study, or in the acquisition, analysis and interpretation of the data;
  2. Contributed to manuscript drafting or critical revisions on the intellectual content;
  3. Approved of the final manuscript version to be published; **and**
  4. Agreed to be accountable for all aspects of the work, ensuring that any questions relating to research integrity or scientific accuracy in any part of the study are appropriately investigated and resolved.

B. Ethical Approval and Informed Consent

  • Ethical Approval: Research on human subjects, materials, or biological data must conform to the **Declaration of Helsinki**. Manuscripts must include the name of the **ethics committee** that approved the study and the **reference number**. If a study is exempt, mention the confirming ethics committee and the reasons for the exemption. Ethical approval documents should be submitted in **.PDF format**.
  • Informed Consent (Research): For studies involving human subjects or tissue, it must be stated that informed consent was obtained from all participants. If exempt, this should be mentioned. The informed consent waiver should be submitted in **.PDF format**.
  • Informed Consent (Case Reports): For case reports using patient information/images, it must be stated that the patient or parent/guardian/next of kin provided **written informed consent** for publication. This consent should be submitted in **.PDF format**.

C. Conflict of Interests

Authors must **disclose** any conflict of interests (COI), which arise if personal or financial relationships may influence the data interpretation (e.g., grants, funding, employment, or strong personal beliefs). If no competing interests exist, the authors must write: “The authors declare that they have no conflict of interests.”

D. Funding and Acknowledgements

  • Funding: Mention all sources of funding. If the sponsor(s) had any role in the study, this must be mentioned. If no funding was received, authors should write **“Not applicable”**.
  • Acknowledgements: Mention individuals who contributed but do not qualify as an author (full name, title, affiliation, and contribution). If there are no individuals to acknowledge, authors should write **“Not applicable”**.

V. References, Tables, and Figures

A. References

  • The **Vancouver style** is used to cite references.
  • References should be limited to articles published in the **last 10 years**.
  • For papers with more than 6 authors, only the first 6 authors should be written followed by **“et al.”**.
  • In the Reference list, references must be **numbered consecutively** in the order they appear in the text.
  • In the text, references must be cited using **numbers in superscript**.
  • Journal titles must be abbreviated according to standard abbreviations.
  • Citing abstracts or personal communications should be avoided.

B. Tables

  • Should be limited to **6 tables**.
  • Each table should be submitted along with the manuscript **after the Reference list**.
  • Font size 12, 1.5 spacing.
  • Tables must be labelled using **Arabic numerals** (Table 1, Table 2, etc.) and cited sequentially in the Results section.
  • Include a **short title** immediately before the table.
  • Any abbreviations or symbols should be defined immediately below the table (in footnotes).

C. Figures and Legends

  • Should be limited to **6 figures**.
  • Figures should be submitted in **.JPEG format**.
  • Figure resolution should be at least **300 dpi**.
  • Figures must be labelled using **Arabic numerals** (Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, etc.) and cited sequentially in the Results section.
  • Figure labels (number, alphabet, arrow, circle, etc.) should be used when necessary. Labels must be of the same font (Arial) and size, be in contrast with the background, and not overlap.
  • Images or parts thereof have not been published elsewhere unless permission has been obtained and provided to us.
  • Images should not contain any patient information that might identify them unless written permission has been obtained and provided to us.
  • Image manipulation in brightness, contrast, or colour balance should apply to the entire image and not only a selected part to manipulate results. If manipulation is done, it should be described in figure legends.

Figure Legends

  • Each figure legend should be submitted along with the manuscript **after the Tables**.
  • All figure labels should be addressed in the figure legend.
  • For microscopic images, the **original magnification** should be stated in the figure legend.

VI. Submission Process

Authors need to **register** with the journal before submitting their article via the online submission platform. If already registered, authors can simply log in and begin the submission process.
